It’s December 14, 2019. My brother invited me to go and see Jarrod Lawson perform live in Bird’s Basement, Melbourne — a concert that was absolutely amazing. Afterward, we pass by the liquor shop to grab some rice wine.
“What have you been up to tonight?” I hear from behind the counter.
Five minutes later, the shop employee and I are excitedly talking about the concert, music, Sign This Kid and his upcoming projects. His name is Billie and, as I soon discover, he’s a jack of all trades.
Billie Kid is a non-stop creator and all-round fantastic human being. Every Friday he hosts a jam session in Golden Monkey (temporarily on hold due to COVID). It was there where I had some of my most memorable Melbourne nights (the other two? Section 8 and Ferdydurke).
Backed by a guitar player or two, he sings the smoothest soul and R&B (think Musiq Soulchild). Stepping into Golden Monkey on those Friday nights is like entering someone’s living room: It’s cozy, people are engaged and everyone’s having a blast. Those are Billie’s people, so you can imagine the type of welcoming guy he is.
Apart from creating music, he also draws and designs customized pieces (jackets, skateboards, you name it). And yesterday, he dropped his 4-track EP 24HRS. This sunny, relaxed EP is exactly what you need in the midst of a pandemic.
Session is a laidback summer track featuring rapper Baz Kaybee, that would be perfect for driving in a convertible along the coastline (ugh, my wanderlust is unreal).
Baddie is the catchy head-nodding tune that makes you instantly do shoulder rolls. Its line “Can we talk for a minute? I wanna know your name” makes me want to put on some silky pajamas and blast Tevin Campbell, and every other 90s R&B star, after I’m finished listening to this EP.
The third track, 90sgirl, is —as the name implies — a nineties throwback featuring the two talented Melbourne-based singers Sofiyah and Remedy (who you can hear here too, so good).
And finally, the closing song (and my personal favorite) Radio, is the perfect mix of Billie’s smooth vocals and soulful trumpet licks by Will E Trumpet.
